Get Over A Weight Loss Plateau

To get over a weight loss plateau can be one of the most frustrating things to do in your weight loss journey. Most people who engage in a weight loss program lose some quick weight, but then the pace slows down. At some point, they hit a weight loss plateau, where the scale just won’t seem to budge.  If this is you, you’re not alone, so don’t give up.

The weight loss plateau happens for various reasons, among them a change in diet, exercise, stress, or just the simple fact that your body is deciding stay put for a while. Whatever the cause, here are some ways to get past your weight loss plateau.

Change Your Workout

Your body can get used to your workout routine. If you have been walking around the block for 2 months straight your body might be quite used to it. Stimulating a different set of muscles or working at a different intensity can rev up your metabolism and get your body stimulated again. Changing up your workout routine is a great way to get over a weight loss plateau.

Reduce Your Calories

If you calculated that you need 2,000 calories to lose one pound per week 3 months ago and then lost 12 pounds, guess what? That math is not longer correct. Recalculate your calorie needs now at your new weight. You might be eating too many calories. Start with a small adjustment (no more than 250 calories) for a couple weeks to see if it gets you over your weight loss plateau.

Increase Your Calories

It seems counter-intuitive, but if you have been taking in too few calories it may actually be causing your body to inhibit your weight loss. It could also be that your estimation of calories burned in your workouts is incorrect and you are burning more than you think. If you have been going too low in your calories, add some calories back into your diet. Start with a 250 calorie adjustment for a couple weeks and see what happens.

Count Your Calories

Knowing how to lose a pound by counting your calories can help. It may be time to count calories very carefully for a week to see what you are truly eating. This will either validate your diet or allow you to make the necessary adjustment to get over your weight loss plateau.

Get Back on Track
