How To Find Motivation To Work Out

Many people are searching to find motivation to work out. They started strong, stuck with it for a while, but then the motivation started lacking.  It is a very common routine.

The problem is, many people start a workout with a grand goal. Those goals are good and important indeed, but they are often too far reaching or too distant in the future. It becomes difficult to stay motivated to work out when we feel like a little cheat here and there won’t hurt because we have so much time to make up for it.

Another common problem is that people don’t have a goal at all. They just want to get in shape. That is great and a worthwhile goal, but what does it really mean?

To find motivation to work out, most people really need a goal that meets these three criteria:

Short Term

A work out goal should have a deadline, like one week, 15 days, or 30 days maximum. A weight loss goal to lose 30 pounds in a year won’t cut it. To stay motivated to work out, you need to be focused and today needs to matter. If your ultimate goal is something far away like a marathon, a wedding, or one year weight loss, break it down into what you will achieve by the end of this month and focus on that shorter goal first.

Measurable

Your workout must be measurable. That means you must measure it and track it. Get a workout journal and write it down so you can follow along and know you are on track to meet your goal. Doing yard work is not very measurable. Walking for 30 minutes a day or biking 5 miles a day is.

Realistic

Set a workout goal that makes sense. If you are 100 pounds overweight, that doesn’t mean you should lose it all in one year. The best way to lose weight is slowly, so a realistic goal might be to lose 5 pounds by the end of your first month. That is a goal that is realistic and, if repeated, can equal 60 pounds in one year which is not bad. Setting unrealistic goals leads people to bail out as soon as they admit to themselves that they cannot achieve it.

Time to Work Out

Remember, you need a goal for your workout to stay motivated. Break your goals down into short term ones to make today’s effort matter. Track your progress, and pick a realistic goal that will not leave you hopeless from the beginning. That’s how you find motivation to work out.
