The Benefits of Blueberries

Blueberries are one of nature’s super foods, offering all sorts of health benefits.  The benefits of blueberries go beyond just nutrition.  Let’s take a look at some of the ways that adding more blueberries to your diet can benefit you.

Nutrition

Blueberries are a very nutritious food.  They are one of the best fruits high in fiber.  In fact, 1 cup of blueberries will add 4 grams of fiber to your diet.  That’s the same amount you would get if you ate a medium sized apple.

Blueberries are also high in antioxidants and vitamin C, with 25% of your recommended daily allowance in that same cup of blueberries.

Health

Blueberries are often called a super food due to their many health benefits.   Blueberries reduce the risk of heart disease by regulating blood pressure, even lowering it, as well as being a natural anti-inflammatory.  This also makes blueberries good for cardiovascular health.  In addition to that, they reduce the risk of some cancers and Alzheimer’s, and may actually improve your memory.  Remember that!

Fresh Blueberries vs. Frozen Blueberries

If you are looking to add blueberries to your diet but can’t find them either at a reasonable price or because they are out of season, know this.  Frozen blueberries are readily available and they are as good for you as the fresh ones, so keep a bag of blueberries in the freezer for a healthy addition to your meals.

Add Blueberries to Your Diet

The benefits of blueberries are easy to get by adding them to your diet in any number of ways.  Add blueberries to your breakfast cereal or oatmeal in the morning.  Add them to yogurt or your salad for lunch. Make a bowl of fresh fruit by mixing with strawberries, raspberries, and blackberries for a delicious side dish at dinner.  You can use dried blueberries to add to cooked dishes or breads or just for a snack.  They also are tasty in smoothies or even on ice cream.
