The Importance of Three Types of Exercise

If you want to make sure you are following a well rounded exercise routine it is important to make sure you are getting three important types of exercise.

You could think of these three things as a three-legged stool.  For your stool to really work you will need all three legs or else it will ultimately fail.  Your workout is similar to this.  Including all three types of exercise in your routine will help you to stay fit longer, with greater ease, and avoid injury all at the same time.

Let’s take a look at the three exercise types:


Cardio is what gets your heart pumping in your target heart rate zone.  That is good for your heart and your entire cardiovascular system.  Cardio is a great way to burn some serious calories and increase your stamina so that you can stay active for longer periods of time.  Cardio alone can work great, but if you stop you can return to your pre-cardio shape quickly unless you incorporate weights and stretching into your routine.


Weight lifting is what builds your muscles.  Your muscle will burn far more calories throughout the day than your fat, so increasing your muscle mass is one of the best ways to stay fit.   Weight lifting can also have prolonged benefits to your calorie burn for several hours after the workout.  Weight lifting alone can make you big, but you will be stiff and prone to injury if you don’t include cardio and stretching.


Stretching is the most ignored component of a complete exercise program but it may be the most important.  Stretching increases your flexibility which means you will find it easier to do more forms of exercise and you will be less likely to get injured.  Stretching alone is great, but to really get in shape you need to sweat a bit with cardio and weight lifting.

Include All Three

To insure that you are following a complete workout routine, include all three important types of exercise.
