Nut or Not, Almonds Are Good For You

Is the almond a nut or not?  Well, the answer is clear.  The almond is actually a drupe, but to make it even more simple, think of it as a seed of the almond tree surrounded by a shell.  When we eat almonds, we are eating the seed that was inside the shell.

But that’s not what really matters.  What really matters beyond whether the almond is a nut is how good almonds are for you.  One ounce of almonds (about 20 or so) has around 160 calories, 6 grams of protein, 14 grams of fat, and 3.5 grams of fiber.  That means it’s not a low calorie or low fat snack, but you get a good amount of protein and an excellent source of fiber from almonds.

But the fat is deceiving.  The fat in almonds is around 90% monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fat.  Those are the good guys, which can lower the bad LDL cholesterol levels in the blood.  You want some of these fats in your diet.

In addition to lowering LDL cholesterol, almonds health benefits include a high level of vitamin E, an antioxident.  They also lower the risk of heart disease, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, some cancers, and are good for your skin.  Almonds are good for you indeed.

The greatest thing about almonds may be their versatility.  You can add them to almost anything.  Keep a bag of almonds around for a quick snack.  Keep a bag of sliced almonds on hand to add to your favorite yogurt, oatmeal, or cereal.  Add crushed almonds to your casserole or homemade bread.  The possibilities are unlimited.

So, are almonds a nut or not?  Now you know, but the most important thing to know is that almonds are good for you.
