Strawberries: High Nutrition, Low Calories

If you are looking for a sweet treat with high nutrition and low in calories, look no further than the strawberry. Strawberries not only look great and taste great, they are good for you too.

Strawberries are often referred to as a super food because of their very high nutritional value, high antioxidant value, and the fact that they prevent certain diseases. Adding 1 cup of sliced strawberry halves will only cost you about 50 calories, but here are some of the goodies you get with that serving in addition to the great taste:

  • around 150% of your daily value (DV) of vitamin C, more than an orange
  • 3 added grams of fiber – about 12% DV
  • good source of potassium and manganese
  • no saturated or trans fat, no cholesterol, and almost no sodium
  • high in antioxidants
  • a natural anti-inflammatory
  • prevent cardiovascular disease
  • lower risk of certain cancers

If strawberries are not in season, don’t worry, you can usually find frozen strawberries for a reasonable price at the store. Just make sure they aren’t packed with any added sugar – they don’t need it. In fact, frozen strawberries might just be better for you than fresh ones, unless you just went outside and picked your own. Strawberries, like many other fruits, lose some nutritional value when stored while frozen berries are frozen immediately, so don’t be afraid to check the freezer section.

Strawberries are a great way to add nutrition to your diet since they can easily be added to nearly any meal. Add strawberries to your breakfast cereal or oatmeal. Add them to plain yogurt for a delicious snack. Slice strawberries onto your salad for lunch or blend them into a fruit smoothie. Mix with other berries for a mixed berry side dish at dinner or just eat them alone as a snack.

Why not get out to the store and grab some fresh or frozen strawberries today and, if you can, go pick them yourself or mark your calendar to hit the local strawberry patch when the season comes? Remember, strawberries are low in calories but high in several nutrients. They prevent certain diseases and are healthy fresh or frozen. Strawberries can be easily added to many of your meals for some added nutrition without adding many calories.
