How Do You Cook Broccoli?

Broccoli is a great addition to your diet, but how do you cook broccoli? Does it matter if broccoli is steamed, boiled, or cooked in the microwave? And what is healthier between the broccoli stems vs. florets that are generally more well liked by people?

Broccoli is one of nature’s super foods. It is a significant source of vitamins C and K and is also very high in vitamin A, folate, and an excellent source of fiber. Broccoli has been studied extensively and it is thought to reduce the risk of some cancers. In addition, it is a natural anti-inflammatory and it’s full of antioxidants. Broccoli is a healthy snack or addition to any meal.

Broccoli is easy to add to your diet, but many people are not sure how you cook broccoli. The simple answer is that you can cook it nearly any way you want, but there are some health benefits to certain methods. For example, steaming broccoli has been found to maintain more of the health benefits in the plant than boiling in water, especially if broccoli is boiled for more than a few minutes. Microwaving is somewhere in the middle of the two, and eating the broccoli raw is also an excellent choice. If you have to opt between steaming and boiling, choose steaming every time.

To steam broccoli to perfection just steam it for 4-5 minutes. So how do you cook broccoli to get the stems and florets both just right? You may find that dropping the stems into the steamer a minute or two ahead of the florets gives you the perfect cooking time. Steamed broccoli should be cooked but nowhere near mushy. It is better to be slightly crisp than soggy.

If you are wondering which is the healthier part of the plant, don’t. The entire plant is very nutritious and good for you. Having said that, there is evidence that the florets and leaves (yes, the part you probably never eat) are the healthiest parts of the plan, but the stems are so close that you should not let them go to waste.

Broccoli is a great addition no matter how you slice it. In addition to the source of fiber and vitamins you get great color and texture to add to dishes like casseroles or as a delightful side to fish. Fresh raw spinach makes a great and crisp snack that you can eat guilt free whenever the mood strikes you.

So how do you cook broccoli? Steamed may be the best way, but any way you add broccoli to your diet is perfectly acceptable.
